We could see the Mexican border from this spot in southern Arizona. We had scouted for about 4 hours before deciding on this spot to shoot. I set up my camera (Nikon N90s, my last shoot totally with film, on a Bogen tripod) as Gary set his up from a different angle. We travel and shoot together often and when he shoots I assist him, likewise when I shoot. We shot a couple of rolls each that night starting just after dark. This shot started about 1 hour after sunset, almost totally dark but with a little glow on the horizon. The plan is that we use handheld flashes to create our shape and depth. I'm the foreground and large cactus guy and Gary is already way back by the smaller cactus area in the ready position. I opened the shutter and gave a shout to Gary to start, then I managed to trip over my camera bag, I quickly recovered to exposed my assigned areas within my best guess of an exposure time. I was pleased with several shots that night but this was my favorite.
