I did 5 or 6 of these types of theme star traces. The Long Wait was shot with a Nikon F-3 with a 20mm Nikkor lens and Ektachrome film. Set up 2 hours before darkness with 3 electronic flashes to light me, the car and the foreground. After total darkness I opened the shutter, got into place and used a remote flash trigger to do the first part. I walked over and carefully covered the lens with a dark cloth and proceeded to take down all unneeded equipment. I then went over, uncovered the lens, popped the top on a beer and sat for another 6 hours (&4 beers) to get the traces around the north star. If you look closely you can see the short trace then a blank space then long trace. The blank space is when I covered the lens. I was so mad when a Military helicopter went over and my neighbor drove by a the time, but loved it when seeing the final result.
Over the years Mike has dabbled in painting, sculpting & wood working as well as photography. Mike's turning point in his artistic abilities came when he learned how to use the dreaded computer in the mid 80s, then he could combine his love for art with his photographs. Mike's work has won numerous awards as well as being shown all over the country in galleries and museums. Now after 25 years of Commercial Photography in the High Point area, Mike now creates art full time, living just outside of Dunn North Carolina. "Welcome to the world as I see it. To smile, be happy and laugh as much as possible, that's what life should be about. I hope this shows through my work and makes you feel the same way." Mike

This is totally awesome. I think it probably turned out better with the helicopter and the neighbor in it than without. Is this in your own driveway? If so, it's a good place to be if you need to photograph the north star! You've got some truly excellent work Mike.
Mike McGlothlen replied:
This was a great house to shoot at, star traces out front and great lightning shots off the back deck. I miss that house. Thanks for looking Gordon!
