- 20 pieces of hardwood @ 5 cm x 10 cm
- 1 high torque quartz clock movement
- 1 pendulum drive
- 2 LED circuits with 26 red, yellow and white LED bulbs
- Metal and brass springs & gears from several old clocks
- epoxy & hot glue
- gold, red, black, white and clear paints
My goal was to create a wall clock that appeared to have just blown up with movement and fire showing through from inside. The face was penciled out onto the plywood, then used a 5 mm router to cut into the wood about 5 mm. With a band saw each piece was cut out by following the routed out lines, to make 38 pieces in all. The 15 numbers were cut out of hardwood. Each piece was primed then painted with, a layer of gold, a layer of black and the tops of the face pieces painted white, with the tops of the numbers red. The grid was cut into a rough circle then spray painted with red, white, gold and black in a modeled manner to appear to have hot spots. At this time each face piece was placed on the grid and with a wood chisel were split to vary the thickness across the whole face then tacked in place with hot glue. All the numbers but the 6 were glued on with epoxy glue. The face was then turned over to work on the back placing behind the larger pieces two battery packs, two light circuits, 26 bulbs, wires, a switch, the time movement and the pendulum. The pendulum will hold the number 6 so it will be swinging. Also attached to the back are hardwood braces to hold a back plate to hang the clock by. Since you can see through the clock there were springs, gears and other parts attached to the back plate. Almost finished, how hang the clock up and figure out where to mount the brass gears using a knife and epoxy glue. Now, fire up the torch and burn areas of the face and numbers to give it that final touch.
